This project was part of the wider £11m investment into Hessle’s foreshore Tidal Defence Scheme, Ashcourt were appointed the works to create an almost 700m long concrete reinforced tidal barrier along the front of the foreshore.

The work for client Tilbury Douglas, consisted of the civil works across the length of the northern shoreline of the Humber Estuary. The bespoke barrier, created with glass panelling along the top in most places to allow the existing houses to continue to benefit from the view, was implemented below ground and with reinforced concrete. Half of the project barrier sits on piles while the other half has been erected with a mass fill concrete base.

As well as the barrier and production and delivery of approximately 2000m3 of concrete, we also implemented an effective drainage solution for the whole of the wall length along with the installation of bases for flood gates that allow both vehicular and pedestrian access. The gates are there for people to use throughout the day yet can be closed to seal the barrier should a flood threat occur.

The scheme will help to reduce the risk of flooding for more than 100,000 properties in the city of Hull and form the wider works of a £200 million investment in flood defence work across the East Riding of Yorkshire and Hull.
